Police Requirements

  • Applicant must be qualified to be a licensed Texas Peace Officer and have a valid Texas Driver’s License
  • Applicant may apply for employment if the applicant is currently enrolled in the basic police officer academy. Applicant will not be eligible for hiring until academy is complete, and applicant is a licensed Texas Peace Officer
  • Applicant must be able to work in the U.S. on an unrestricted basis
  • Applicant must be a high school graduate or equivalent
  • Applicant must have no felony or domestic violence convictions and no DWI or DUID convictions within the last ten years
  • Applicants must pass a basic reading and writing skills exam, a fitness assessment, a firearms qualification, polygraph exam and an Oral Review Board
  • APPLICANT MUST BE OF GOOD MORAL CHARACTER AS EVIDENCED THROUGH PROPER REFERENCES, GENERAL REPUTATION AND/OR JOB HISTORY CONFIRMED THROUGH A BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION.

Hiring Process

The following are the steps required in the hiring process for the position of police officer. All applicants must meet the minimum requirements and pass each step in the hiring process.

  • Applicant must complete online application during an open hiring process. Click here for a list of current available positions.
  • Applicant must complete and submit Personal History Statement and personal documents with the general application.
  • Applicant must complete and pass physical agility testing including a blood pressure check.
  • Applicant must complete writing sample.
  • Applicant must attend and pass oral review board.
  • Applicant must pass polygraph exam.
  • Applicant must pass background investigation.
  • Applicant must pass written testing (Basic reading, writing, and math).
  • Applicant must pass psychological exam.
  • Applicant must pass health screen and drug screen.

Physical Fitness Standards

Applicant must complete the physical fitness exam at a minimum overall average of 40%. The exam consist of the following:

  • Blood pressure testing. Applicant’s blood pressure must be under 150/90 mmHG, or applicant will not be able to test without written consent from medical doctor. Three attempts are allowed. Blood pressure testing is not included in the 40% for the PT testing.
  • Vertical jump (40% is 16.5 inch vertical jump)
  • Maximum number of sit-ups in one minute (40% is 31 sit-ups)
  • 300 meter sprint (40% is 64.5 seconds)
  • Maximum number of push-ups in one minute (40% is 29 push-ups)
  • 1.5 mile run (40% is 15:20 minutes)

Medical Standards

Applicant must pass a physical examination, a drug screen, and a psychological examination.

Training and Education

New officers train for 4 months in the Field Training Program where they will ride and train with a Field Training Officers and be trained in, but not limited to, the following areas:

  • Patrol Procedures
  • Officer Safety
  • Report Writing
  • Equipment Use
  • City Ordinances
  • Proper Use Of Force
  • Policies and Procedures
  • Proper Application of the Law

Upon successful completion of the training program new officers will be assigned to one of the two schedules and one of the 3 shifts the department utilizes to provide maximum coverage and services to the community. The schedules consist of Sunday-Wednesday or Wednesday-Saturday. We employ 3 shifts to provide constant coverage to the community: Days 6:45AM-4:45PM, Evenings 3:45PM-1:45AM, and Nights 9:45PM-7:45AM.

All department personnel work on Wednesdays which is a designated training day for police personnel (alternating weeks). Officers obtain over 200 TCOLE Certified training hours per year. In this training we provide a variety of topics ranging from areas including:

  • Police Ethics
  • Use of Force
  • Officer Survival
  • Penal Code
  • Search and Seizure Law
  • Defensive Tactics
  • Intermediate Weapons
  • Code of Criminal Procedures

Off site police training for topics not covered by this weekly training are also available. The Rosenberg Police Department also encourages continuing education for college degrees and offers incentive pay to those officers that successfully attain their diplomas.

Police Positions:

  • An applicant is qualified for the police officer position if the applicant has one or more of the following:
    • 40 hours of College from a TCOLE recognized accredited college.
    • 4 years active full time military experience.
    • 2 years prior full time police officer experience.
    • The applicant must meet all other minimum qualifications listed above.
  • An applicant is qualified for the probationary police officer position if the applicant has the following:
    • Has completed the TCOLE Basic Police Officer Academy, and is licensed by the State of Texas as a Peace Officer.
    • The applicant must meet all other minimum qualifications listed above.

The Rosenberg Police Department has a patrol fleet of 30+ vehicles, all of which are equipped with MCT computers, mobile video cameras, electronic citation writers, speed radars, patrol rifles, and most advanced technology in this profession. The department regularly evaluates equipment and prides itself to stay on the cutting edge of new and available technology that may be available to make our jobs more effective, efficient and safer.

In addition to City-wide benefits, the Rosenberg Police Department offers a Take Home Vehicle Program. Each RPD officer living within the extraterritorial jurisdiction of the City of Rosenberg has the opportunity to be assigned a patrol vehicle to take to their residence with them. Officers are eligible for this program after completing their probationary period (one year of employment). Vehicles are assigned based on seniority and availability.
