Utilities Location Technician

POSITION SUMMARY:

Identifies, locates, marks, and documents the location of City-owned subsurface utilities to minimize accidental damage or disruption of service due to excavation activities. This includes marking all water and sewer mains, services, manholes, cleanouts, valves, and any other utility devices as outlined by regulation. Assists with preparing written documents verifying marked utilities, and assists with expediting claims research regarding utility repairs.  Assists with maintaining the department’s inventory of as-built plans and other related duties.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Locate and mark water and sewer mains, services and any other items for contractors, builders, developers, customers as well as other utilities
  • Assists with preparing the Railroad Commission of Texas (RRC), Damage Reporting Form and other written documents verifying marked utilities
  • May be required to enter confined spaces (manholes) to properly identify infrastructure
  • Repair and construct City water and wastewater lines, expose utilities, repair leaks, set taps, repair fire hydrants and valves, flush mains, clear stoppages, etc.
  • Abides by all policies, procedures, rules, etc., associated with the City’s Safety Program
  • Must be able to work the allocated hours of the position and be willing to report for duty on short notice at any hour of the day or night
  • Will be required to work an on call schedule

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or its equivalent (GED)
  • Six (6) months recent experience in activities including line locating, identifying underground utilities and reading blueprints
  • Three (3) years’ experience in manual labor activities in utility line maintenance or construction

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Class B Commercial Driver License
    • Reliable transportation and liability insurance
  • Groundwater C Certification from Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ)
  • Wastewater Collection Class II Certification from Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ)
  • Appointment will be conditional upon successful completion of the following pre-employment checks:
    • Criminal background check and controlled substance screening
